Ed Noyons, PhD

Everard (Ed) Christiaan Marie Noyons is a senior researcher at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University. He is a member of the Engagement & Inclusion and Evaluation & Culture focal areas. He is also a board member of CWTS BV.

Ed was born 10 June 1963 in Drunen, the Netherlands. He studied Dutch Language and Linguistics at the De Vooys Institute at Utrecht University and graduated in 1989 on Particles and Postpositions in Dutch. Since 1988, he works at CWTS.

In 1999 Ed received his PhD degree (cum laude) in quantitative studies of science from Leiden University. His thesis was about ‘Bibliometric mapping as a science policy and research management tool’. In the same year he became a research fellow at CWTS. He has co-authored many papers published in peer-reviewed international journals, has delivered keynote lectures at international conferences, and has been program chair in several scientometric conferences.

Ed has developed and managed all science mapping projects at CWTS for over ten years and presently manages and coordinates CWTS BV projects, in particular linking these to the CWTS knowledge agenda.

In 2001, Ed joined the CWTS management team. Between 2019 and 2023, he served as deputy director of CWTS responsible for externally funded projects.

Presently Ed’s main research interests involve structures, mapping of science and their use in science policy and research management, field delineation, and multi-dimensional, in particular societal, impact of science.
