CWTS Scientometrics Spring School (CS3)

Zhejiang University in China will host the CWTS Scientometrics Spring School 2019. The school offers high quality doctoral level training in the field of scientometrics. By organizing the next edition in China, CWTS aims to contribute to global scientometric education.

Course description

As a doctoral student, it can be challenging to get started with research: How do I push the boundaries of current knowledge? What are recent important developments in my field? More generally: how does science work?

The CWTS Scientometrics Spring School explores these questions from a scientometric perspective. Participants will be introduced to methods and techniques that use scientometric data sources, for instance the metadata of scholarly publications, to address the above questions. The spring school will cover general quantitative methods, such as network analysis and text analysis, as well as scientometric methods such as citation analysis and co-authorship analysis. Major scientometric data sources, including Web of Science, Scopus, Dimensions and Google Scholar, will be discussed, including their strengths and limitations. The spring school will emphasize practical applications by engaging participants with the data. Visualization of science will play an important role in the course, with a special focus on the use of the VOSviewer software.

The practical applications of scientometrics will be placed within a broader theoretical perspective. The main frameworks of sociology of science will be introduced and some of the most pressing questions in the study of science will be discussed: How does science progress? How do scholars build on previous knowledge? How is scientific practice influenced by social factors?

The spring school will close by critically examining the research system. We will discuss the role of scientometric indicators (e.g., journal impact factor and h-index) in the research system, take a closer look at evaluations, funding, and career opportunities, and discuss how scientometric evaluations may have both beneficial and detrimental effects on scientific practice. The spring school will be highly relevant to students pursuing a doctoral degree in scientometrics, but also to doctoral students from other fields who want to make use of scientometric methods in their research.

The CWTS Scientometrics Spring School is unique in its exclusive focus on doctoral students and other (junior) researchers. Other summer schools and courses in scientometrics, offered both at CWTS and elsewhere, address a mixed audience consisting of both researchers and practitioners. By focusing exclusively on doctoral students and (junior) researchers, the CWTS Scientometrics Spring School is able to provide scientometric education with a strong emphasis on fundamental scientific problems in the field of scientometrics.

Student requirements

  • English proficiency.
  • Master degree (any discipline).
  • Currently following doctoral (PhD) training.
    • Early post-doctoral researchers are also welcome.
  • No specific pre-requisite knowledge.

Participants are expected to bring their own laptop, which is required for some of the practical exercises.

The spring school will be taught by leading scholars in the field of scientometrics.

  • CWTS, Leiden University.

    Nees Jan is senior researcher at CWTS. He develops tools and algorithms for analyzing and visualizing science, and is the main developer of the VOSviewer software. He is also head of the IT department at CWTS.

  • Université de Montréal and CWTS, Leiden University.
    Vincent is associate professor at Université de Montréal and visiting professor at CWTS. At Université de Montréal, Vincent holds the Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication.
     
  • Cassidy SugimotoCassidy Sugimoto
  • Indiana University Bloomington and US National Science Foundation.
    Cassidy is associate professor at Indiana University Bloomington and currently serves as a program director at the US National Science Foundation. Her research focuses on scholarly communication and scientometrics. She is president of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI).

  • CWTS, Leiden University.
    Vincent is senior researcher at CWTS. He is responsible for the Modeling Science research line and coordinates the CWTS Scientometrics Spring School.

 

  • Ludo Waltman
  • CWTS, Leiden University.
    Ludo is deputy director of CWTS and professor of Quantitative Science Studies. In addition, he is co-developer of the VOSviewer software. Ludo also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Informetrics.

Intensity

  • PhD level education.
  • Equivalent of about 3 European Study Credits (≈ 75 hours).
  • Required reading in advance (≈ 30 hours).

Registration

The registration fee is € 800. This excludes travel and lodging, which will have to be arranged separately. Lunch is included in the registration fee. The maximum number of participants in the spring school is 40 and participation will be determined on the basis of motivation and CV. The registration fee will need to be paid in an online portal after being admitted to the spring school. This portal accepts a wide variety of credit cards (e.g. American Express, MasterCard and Visa) and other payment methods. An invoice can be sent to you upon request.
