University-industry research cooperation in the United Kingdom: new findings

May 6th, 2019

logoCWTS is one of the international research partners in the UK-based Center for Global Higher Education (CGHE). Our work focuses on UK universities and their research connections with R&D-active industry. Last week our latest CGHE working paper was published online: “Globalisation, localisation and glocalisation of university-business research cooperation: general patterns and trends in the UK university system”.

The report, co-authored by Robert Tijssen, Wouter van de Klippe and Alfredo Yegros, presents the quantitative findings of our CGHE study’s second and final stage. Analyzing the thousands of joint research publications produced by 48 research-intensive universities in collaboration with research partners in industry, we measured the distance between the geographical locations of the author affiliate addresses on those publications. Our categories range from short-distance ‘local’ (0-49 km from the university’s city centre) to long-distance ‘global’ (more than 4,999 km). The annual growth trends, between 2008 to 2017, reveals further internationalisation and globalisation of university-industry interactions. We observe a significant ‘Europeanisation effect’: many business sector research partners of UK universities are located on the continent.
