The aim of this course is to give the participants a thorough introduction into bibliometric network analysis and science mapping, with a special emphasis on the VOSviewer software (www.vosviewer.com) developed at Leiden University’s Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS). Participants are introduced into the main techniques for bibliometric network analysis and science mapping. Special attention is paid to applications in a research evaluation and science policy context. The small group (max. 16 participants) allows participants to practice extensively with the VOSviewer software and to explore the functionality in full detail. In addition, participants will practice with CitNetExplorer, a new bibliometric network analysis tool available at www.citnetexplorer.nl. The course has an interactive format in which there is a lot of room for discussion and exchanging ideas.
The lecturers of the course are Ludo Waltman and Nees Jan van Eck. The lecturers are prominent researchers in the field of bibliometric network analysis and science mapping. They are the developers of the well-known VOSviewer and CitNetExplorer software tools. They also have an extensive experience with the application of bibliometric network analysis in a research evaluation and science policy context.
We advise participants that the course is most beneficial for them if they have some basic background knowledge on bibliometrics. In order to have optimal possibilities for interaction with the lecturers, the number of participants in the course is limited to 16. Participants are expected to bring their own laptop with them.
