Dr. Niki Vermeulen

Niki Vermeulen is a visiting researcher at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), while based in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (STIS) of the University of Edinburgh.

Niki specialises in science and innovation policy and the organisation of research, with an emphasis on scientific collaboration. She just completed a Wellcome Trust fellowship on the emergence of systems biology, analysing the ways in which scientists attempt to model life. Through her engagement with the establishment of centers for systems biology, she became interested in the institutionalization of research, which she is now exploring in the context of the new Francis Crick Institute and Institutes of Advanced Studies. Within this context she aims to combine qualitative and quantitative research to map architectures of collaborations. Niki is a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland and developed www.curiousedinburgh.org to showcase Edinburgh’s rich scientific heritage.
