Bibliometric Data Sources and Indicators (online)

We are happy to announce the 2023 edition of the course Bibliometric Data Sources and Indicators to be organized online for the Americas. The course is provided by Leiden University’s Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) in collaboration with the Galter Health Sciences Library at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. CWTS, located in Leiden, the Netherlands, is a world-leading research center in the field of bibliometrics and scientometrics and an important provider of high-quality bibliometric statistics. Galter Library works closely with Northwestern University’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (NUCATS) to provide support on evaluation and continuous improvement.

Schedule

The course will be held online during office hours in the Americas from November 13th until November 16th 2023. US EST 10.00 am - 12.00 pm and 1.00 pm - 3.00 pm.

Aim

This course consists of four half-day sessions. The course provides an introduction to bibliometric data sources and indicators. The course covers the fundamentals that professional users of bibliometrics need to be familiar with.
After completing the course, you will:

  • know the various bibliometric databases and their strengths and weaknesses;
  • have a solid understanding of the definition, calculation and interpretation of a wide range of bibliometric indicators.

Audience

The course aims to serve (university) librarians, research policy staff and anyone else with a professional interest in bibliometrics.

Course program

Days 1 and 2: Introduction, bibliometric data sources, data collection and data curation
Days 3 and 4: Bibliometric indicators, definition, calculation and interpretation

Lecturers

The course is provided by the following lecturers:

Clara Calero-Medina, PhD: Clara is senior researcher and bibliometric consultant at CWTS. She has a background in economics, and science and technologies studies. Clara is a member of the Information & Openness focal area at CWTS.

Vincent Traag, PhD: Vincent is senior researcher at CWTS. He has a background in sociology and applied mathematics. Vincent is a member of the Engagement & Inclusion focal area at CWTS. In addition to his scientific research, Vincent is also a bibliometric consultant at CWTS.

Ludo Waltman, Professor of Quantitative Science Studies: Ludo is one of the coordinators of the Information & Openness focal area at CWTS. He is also coordinator of the CWTS Leiden Ranking and co-developer of the VOSviewer software for bibliometric visualization.

Course fee

The course fee is € 1000 excluding VAT. VAT applies for participants within the European Union. Reverse-charge mechanism will be applied. The maximum number of participants is 30. The course will be hosted online.
