Zohreh Zahedi, MSc

Zohreh Zahedi is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University in the Netherlands. Her PhD research focuses on using Altmetrics as an alternative and new data source for measuring research performance.

Zohreh has received both her BA and MA degrees in Knowledge & Information Science with distinction from Shiraz University, Iran. She used to be a Lecturer (at the Department of Knowledge & Information Science, Persian Gulf University, Bushehr) and a researcher (at the Regional Information Center for Science & Technology (RICeST), Shiraz) in Iran; in 2012, she was awarded a competitive PhD Scholarship aimed at gifted students from Ministry of Science, Research & Technology MSRT of Iran for pursuing her PhD Abroad. For her PhD, Zohreh is investigating the different altmetrics data sources and tools to study the possibilities of measuring online evidence of scholarly outputs, to assess their reliability and validity as well as the feasibility of their applications in research assessments purposes; to investigate whether alternative metrics can be useful for research assessment and complement the traditional metrics. Beyond the immediate subject of her PhD, Zohreh is also involved in working groups Career in Policy & Path in Science and Societal Impact of Research (SURE) and particularly contributes to the Altmetrics research line as part of the CWTS SURE working group. She has published a number of papers on the topics of altmetrics and other topics.

Zohreh has received several grants, honors and awards during her PhD at CWTS among them are Leiden University Fund proposal award for doing a collaborative altmetrics project (research visit) in the University of Montreal (Canada), Thomson Reuters 1:AM altmetrics project funding award and the most important one is that she has awarded an ‘Honorable mention’ of the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Scholarship Award by the ISSI committee at the 15th International Conference on Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI 2015), Bogazici University, Istanbul (Turkey) for her PhD dissertation "possibilities and feasibility of using 'altmetric' measurements (social media metrics) in research evaluation".
