Today marks the start of RoRI’s Phase 2. With our international consortium of partners, we’re excited to launch another five years of generating, synthesising and translating ideas and evidence into practical solutions to improve research.
Launched in 2019 by Leiden University’s Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), the University of Sheffield, Wellcome Trust, and Digital Science, the Research on Research Institute (RoRI) has grown into one of the world’s largest collaborative platforms for research on research. Today marks the start of our second phase, which runs until 2027.
RoRI aims to unlock more of the potential of the US$2 trillion that is invested globally in R&D every year. Many recognise the need for different communities to work together to improve how research is funded, practised and evaluated, so that it works better for everybody. Sustained investment and effort will be required to understand deep-rooted challenges, and to test and scale solutions. RoRI’s second phase will see us undertake an expanded portfolio of projects, with more partners and research collaborators around the world — turning the tools of research back on itself.
Sarah de Rijcke, Scientific Director of CWTS and Co-Chair of RoRI:
“At CWTS, we have a strong reputation in doing research on research. RoRI’s transformative mission aligns very well with our own commitment to help improve the research system and its connections with society. Our team will therefore happily continue to support this hugely important endeavour. We know from experience that affecting change at the systems level is hard. It not only requires rigour, resources, and trust, but also patience, care, and a willingness to collaborate and learn. With RoRI, we are building a unique and growing network of researchers, research funders, scholarly communication and infrastructure providers. Because of the network’s scope and broader relevance, it is a highly rewarding position to be in. I look forward to the years to come.”
Join us on Monday 20 June for a special online event from 15:00-18:00 CEST, to kickstart RoRI’s next phase. Co-hosted with the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the meeting will bring together participants and perspectives from stakeholders from 18 countries, to debate the future of research on research, share lessons and highlights from our pilot phase, and look ahead to RoRI’s priorities and plans.
