Prof.dr. Robert Tijssen

Robert Tijssen holds the Chair of Science and Innovation Studies at Leiden University. He leads the Science, Technology and Innovation (STIS) research program at CWTS.

His main interests concern the development and application of analytical frameworks and measurement models to assess trends and patterns within the interdependencies between science, innovation and higher education systems. Robert is an international research partner at the ESRC-HEFCE funded Centre for Global Higher Education (London, UK).

A major part of his research agenda are ‘innovative universities’, which revolves around activities in ranking systems and indicator-driven projects: U-Multirank; Leiden Ranking, U21 Ranking of National Higher Education Systems, and European Innovation Scoreboard. This research connects him to the University of Bologna (Italy) where he holds a visiting fellowship.

Africa is a major part of his academic profile: he is a research fellow at the LDE Center for Frugal innovation in Africa (Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam). He is also professor at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and board member of South Africa’s DST-NRF Center of Excellence in Scientometrics and Science, Technology and Innovation Policy. Major research topics are research excellence in Africa, and university-supported inclusive innovations.

Robert’s advisory and consultancy work on research management and science policy issues, stretching back more than 25 years, includes a portfolio of projects and activities for both public sector clients (European Commission, Innovative Medicines Initiative, national agencies, funding councils) as well as business enterprises in the private sector. The topics range from the mapping R&D landscapes, to the assessment of quality assurance systems, and the evaluation of economic impact of scientific research.

His professional memberships include the editorial advisory board of Research Evaluation, and board membership of the European Network of Indicator Designers (ENID) and the Network for the Assessment & Evaluation of the Societal Impact of Science (AESIS).

Google Scholar Citations provides an overview of his academic research profile, which comprises more than 100 publications.
